Hidden History of the Kovno Ghetto

CLIENT United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

LOCATION Washington, DC

Hidden History traces the lives of Jews in Lithuania from their pre-war, thriving community in Kovno through the first pogroms, the onslaught of Nazi decrees, their forced relocation, their experience as ghetto residents and slave laborers and finally, to the days of their destruction. The story is brought to life in four separate theaters, which feature the oral testimony of survivors. Dramatic lighting effects contrasting indoor and outdoor scenes, subtly slanting walls and purposefully limited views create an unsettling sense of restriction and enclosure.

H+R's most recent project for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, our fifth exhibit for the Museum, opened in April 2018 to commemorate the Museum’s 25th anniversary. Learn more about Americans and the Holocaust here.
