Luray Train Depot

CLIENT The Town of Luray

LOCATION Luray, VA

When steam locomotives were king, Luray was a bustling center of trade and transport. To evoke the town's rail-based heritage, new exhibits in the historic Norfolk & Western depot re-imagine a time when the station was the heart of this rural town—and a tourism hub for the nearby caverns and Shenandoah National Park. Interpretation brings together a railroad floor map with custom art based on Depression-era travel posters, a Ticket Master's Office, digital scrapbooks with rail employee histories and a library of historic photos—all supporting the depot’s centerpiece: a 16-foot model train set. A key goal was to use period-evocative graphic motifs and finishes that complement the historic depot, while achieving a timeless and contemporary exhibit.
