LOCATION Washington, DC

Modern Slavery

President Lincoln's Cottage is a "home for brave ideas" and the place where Lincoln developed the history-changing Emancipation Proclamation. To mark the document's 150th anniversary, the Cottage asked H+R to design an exhibit that confronts visitors with the fact that slavery not only exists in our time, it now holds more people in bondage than were held at the height of the transatlantic slave trade. Through first-person testimonies of survivors, hard statistics and take-home postcards calling on visitors to become modern-day abolitionists, the exhibit takes an unflinching look at human trafficking in our communities. Though dramatic and sobering, the survivors’ stories are ultimately ones of hope showing that the fight against trafficking can be won. The award-winning project was completed within a tight schedule of just a few months.

That exhibit changed me substantively. I’m different as a result.
