H+R was hired to bring attention to the lives and daily rhythms of agricultural life for a farmhand family working and living in the shadow of a magnificent 19th-century mansion and farm owned by former Virginia governor Westmoreland Davis and his wife Marguerite. A series of graphic panels mounted outside and within the family’s modest farmhouse describe what it was like to work the fields, raise prize turkeys in the adjacent brooder house and meet the high standards for agricultural excellence set by the wealthy Davises—all while trying to raise a large family in a tiny three-room home.
