South Mountain Welcome Centers

To encourage passersby to venture off the highway and explore the region, H+R developed a "Highway to History" design approach for the I-70 welcome centers at South Mountain in Frederick and Washington Counties. The twin plazas—one on each side of the highway—offer expansive, custom-illustrated orientation maps and three interpretive panels on nearby Civil War sites, outdoor recreation and shopping opportunities, and the region's contributions to the growth of the nation.
